Reading an Enterprise Security Questionnaire

Enterprise security questionnaires aren't really about your security controls. They're about whether you've thought about each control well enough to answer honestly. Four answer patterns plus a template covering the 30 most common questions.

Frequently asked questions

How long should it take to answer an enterprise security questionnaire?

A team that has been through it a couple of times can work through even a 240-question questionnaire in about four hours and ship a response that closes the deal without a clarification call. The first questionnaire takes roughly a week; by the fifth it is down to a day, and the fiftieth is a copy-paste plus a delta review.

What are enterprise security questionnaires actually testing?

Primarily whether you've thought about each control well enough to give an honest answer, not whether you've implemented every control perfectly. A CISO doesn't expect a Series A company to have a Fortune 500's posture; they want you to know your posture, describe it accurately, and explain what is compensating where coverage is incomplete.

How do I answer when we don't have the exact control they're asking about?

Use a compensating control: name what you do instead and explain why it addresses the same underlying risk. If the capability doesn't apply to your architecture at all, mark it 'not applicable' with a brief reason rather than writing 'see other answer' or 'we follow industry best practices,' which gets you flagged for a follow-up call.

What security questionnaire frameworks will I run into?

The most common is SIG (Shared Assessments): SIG-Lite is about 100 questions and full SIG about 1,000. CAIQ is cloud-specific at roughly 300 questions, VSAQ is newer and more concise, and many large enterprises use a custom questionnaire that borrows 50-70% from SIG. Recognizing the framework lets you reuse prior answers.

Should one person or the whole team fill out the questionnaire?

One person should own the document and make the consistency calls, with subject-matter reviewers for specific sections, because group-edited questionnaires produce inconsistent answers. Keep the founder or CTO in the loop for your first three or four; after that a security or platform engineer can run it end-to-end with senior review only on the tricky questions.

Does a SOC 2 report help with security questionnaires?

Yes, and a finished attestation is the single biggest shortcut. Once you can attach a SOC 2 report, whole blocks of the questionnaire collapse into a one-line 'Yes, see report, section X.'

Six-figure deal stuck on a 240-question form?

The response repository is what makes the fifth one a copy-paste.
